Background of the study
Language standardization aims to create uniformity in language use, often through prescriptive norms in education and media. In Abuja, Nigerian English exhibits considerable phonological variation influenced by local dialects and indigenous language contact (Adeniyi, 2023). This study investigates how efforts toward language standardization affect phonological variation among Nigerian English speakers in Abuja. By comparing speech samples from standardized settings (e.g., formal broadcasts, academic lectures) with those from informal contexts, the research examines differences in pronunciation, intonation, and vowel/consonant production. Acoustic analysis is employed to measure key phonetic parameters and determine whether standardization reduces variability or inadvertently suppresses regional features (Ibrahim, 2024). The study further considers the role of government policies and educational curricula in promoting standardized forms, with implications for linguistic identity and communication efficiency. The findings will contribute to debates on balancing standardization with linguistic diversity in urban settings (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite ongoing language standardization initiatives, significant phonological variation persists in Nigerian English spoken in Abuja. This variability can lead to challenges in mutual intelligibility and professional communication (Adeniyi, 2023). The absence of systematic studies on the effects of standardization hampers the development of coherent language policies and educational strategies aimed at reducing phonetic discrepancies. This study addresses these issues by analyzing acoustic data and sociolinguistic factors that contribute to phonological variation, thereby providing a foundation for improved standardization efforts.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it evaluates the effects of language standardization on phonological variation in Nigerian English, offering insights for policymakers and educators. The findings will guide interventions aimed at improving communication clarity while preserving linguistic identity (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Nigerian English speakers in Abuja, focusing on acoustic and sociolinguistic analyses in formal and informal contexts.
